Epsom Girls Grammar School has a proud musical tradition. There are many opportunities for students to participate in music at EGGS, whether as part of an instrumental group, singing in a choir, learning an instrument or as part of a music class.

Many of our alumnae are active in the music world. Epsom Music provides students with excellent learning experiences, superb resources, skilled staff and wonderful performance opportunities.

Instrumental and vocal tuition

Experienced and highly-qualified teachers give tuition in the playing of musical instruments and voice. All string, woodwind (including saxophone) and brass instruments are taught, along with percussion (including drum kit) and singing. Students are taught in small groups during school time but on a rotating timetable to minimise disruption to other subjects. A levy is requested from each student to cover photocopying and costs associated with the upkeep of resources and facilities. The itinerant system is not intended to cater for advanced students, or students wanting individual tuition. Piano and guitar lessons are available by private arrangement. The school has a limited number of instruments for hire by pupils. Instruments are allocated according to individual need and in the first instance preference is given to students taking music as an option. Full details are available at the beginning of the school year.

For many students thinking about taking lessons in one of the instruments we offer, they may not be familiar with some of the names – particular for orchestral instruments like French Horn, Oboe or Orchestral Percussion. If you would like to see some more info on these instruments and more, as well as demonstrations by professionals, the Philharmonia website has these and more. You can find these here.
