Principal's Bulletin - April 2026

Artboard 1Newsletter Banner

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to Term 2. This is a time when teachers build on the positive learning habits students have established earlier in the year. Teachers also support students to grow in confidence across all Learning Areas; whether experimenting in Science, tackling increasingly complex problems in Mathematics and Technology, expressing ideas in English, Languages, and the Arts, or contributing as active team members in Physical Education, Health, and beyond.

Alongside this important academic focus, we look forward to a number of key events that bring our community together; including the Year 13 Ball, the annual Mother/Grandmother/Daughter Breakfast, the AGS/EGGS production of Les Misérables, and the start of the winter sports season.

In this Bulletin, we want to provide updates on three key areas: formative and summative assessment progress, the 2026 timetable structure, and attendance and engagement rates so far this year.

Assessment grades and communicating progress

This year we have asked all teaching staff to provide timely and clear information about students’ learning progress within each of their subjects. Students and parents are advised if a student is “On Track”, “Reaching Beyond”, or “Needs Attention” following formative assessments. This provides greater clarity about how students are performing ahead of the final summative assessment grade being awarded.

Feedback from parents in Term 1 has been positive, particularly from our boarding community. Parents have told us that this communication helps identify gaps in learning early, allowing support to be put in place at home, through the School, or the boarding house. This practice will continue in Term 2 and parents will have the opportunity to meet with each subject teacher to discuss progress on either 23 June or 2 July at Parent Teacher Interviews.

Timetable structure 2026

Students have responded very positively to the new timetable structure. Many have developed consistent morning routines and are arriving at school on time each day. The early finish time on Wednesdays are being used to engage in our extensive co-curricular programme.

A highlight for senior students (and their teachers) has been the double periods on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. These allow for deeper learning and more practical work. Students have also noted the benefit of more regular contact time with their subject teachers.

We look forward to hearing students’ and parents’ perspectives on the new timetable structure later in the year through a formal review.

Attendance and engagement

The new timetable, weekly reflection times, and clear communications with students and families about attendance expectations are having a positive impact. We are pleased to report that in Term 1, Epsom Girls Grammar School students’ regular attendance has continued to show significant improvement (2022: 40% regular attendance, 2023: 49% regular attendance, 2024: 64% regular attendance, 2025: 70% regular attendance, and in 2026: 75% regular attendance).

To be considered “regularly attending”, students cannot be absent from school for more than five days each term. While illness is unavoidable, regular attendance gives students the best opportunity of achieving their aspirations and having success while at school.

We acknowledge and thank parents and caregivers for your support for your daughter(s) and for our School. We remain committed to working in partnership with you to support every student to achieve her best at Epsom Girls Grammar School and in the future.
