Following community consultation in 2024, the leadership team investigated the possibility of offering students a choice of academic pathways. Our community expressed a clear interest in providing students with the option of being assessed through NCEA (New Zealand’s qualification system) or CAIE (Cambridge Assessment International Education).
To ensure a well-considered response, our management team examined models used in other successful schools and assessed alignment with our vision and values. Following a comprehensive presentation of our findings the School Board decided to explore a dual qualification pathway, launching a pilot group in 2026 and expanding offerings in 2027.
This means that Epsom Girls Grammar School students who want to be part of a pilot group in Year 11 will have the opportunity to study towards a Cambridge qualification. Those students who wish to study the wide range of successful subjects already offered through our current NCEA pathway in Year 11, can continue to do that.
Key Details:
- In 2026, a small number of students will undertake the IGCSE qualifications as part of the Year 11 course;
- These students will have a restricted range of subjects: English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics;
- An information evening will be held in week 5 of Term 2 (26 – 29 May) to provide more information.
Epsom Girls Grammar School has a proud history of taking girls’ education seriously and the NCEA and NZ Scholarship examination results our girls have attained have set them up well for success beyond school. The opportunity for our girls to have choice in their qualification pathway, therefore, is an addition that will supplement the rigourous education that we value at Epsom Girls Grammar School.
