Dawn Parade 2016, by Ella Donaldson
3:30am and the Auckland Museum was a beacon of red in the dreariness of the night. The air was cold and the sky dark on ANZAC morning.
We, the volunteers, met in our school uniforms, scarves tightly wrapped around our throats, red poppies burning holes in our uniforms. Mild
breath rose from cold mouths, staining the air white and mingling towards the sunrise. Medals and badges and nametags swirled around us
as we were stationed around the Museum, handing out hot beverages, pamphlets and poppies to those beginning to arrive.

The bugle sounded, marching feet pounded the dry concrete. We stood and watched as they passed us by, as the planes few over our heads
and wreaths were laid down. We sang into the sunrise and prayed into the grass. People spoke and fags were lowered and raised.

The service fnished at 7.00am but many people still wanted poppies and programmes. After this, a wonderful and generous breakfast
awaited us, which was lovely and delicious. We left the Museum with a wonderful sense of fulflment and happiness, knowing that we had
hopefully made the day run more smoothly and with a newfound appreciation for all that goes on behind the scenes of the dawn parade.
