Acting audition pieces should be prepared as follows:

1) - von Trapp and Frau Schmidt (German or Austrian men and servants) - a discussion between Captain von Trapp and his servant.
Captain: Why did the last governess leave?
Frau Schmidt: Who knows? She just said "I've had enough of this," and walked out.
Captain: Why? Was Louisa playing tricks again? - Putting toads in her bed?
Frau Schmidt: She didn't complain of that, sir.
Captain: (crosses L, reading letter) Well there's another one coming today, from Nonnberg Abbey.
Frau Schmidt: Oh?

2) Mother Abbess and Maria (nuns and Maria) - a confession over why Maria has run away from her employment with the von Trapp family
Mother Abbess: (Blessing Maria) This must have been a trying experience for you
Maria: It was Reverend Mother
Mother Abbess: Has it taught you anything?
Maria: I've learned that I never want to leave these walls again.
Mother Abbess: Why did they send you back to us?
Maria (after a moment's hesitation) They didn't send me back. I left. I left without telling them I was going, without saying goodbye.
Mother Abbess: Sit down Maria. (Maria sits down) What happened? Why did you do this?
Maria: I was frightened.

3) Rolf and Liesl (Rolf and Liesl) - a cat'n'mouse game between the two young lovers
Liesl: How did you know two days ago that you would be here at just this time of tonight with a telegram for Franz?
Rolf: (following her ) Every year on this date he always gets a birthday telegram from his sister.
Liesl: You see - you are wonderful.
Rolf: Can I come again tomorrow night?
Liesl: Rolf you can't be sure you will have a telegram to deliver here tomorrow night.
Rolf: (sitting beside her) I could come here by mistake- with a telegram for Colonel Schneider.

4) Elsa and Max (Max or any of the other Nazi men and Elsa) - two interesting and snobbish German friends
Elsa: Oh yes, whatever became of them?
Max: By the time their voices changed they were rich enough to live in America. Who lives in that dilapidated castle down there? Rumplestiltskin?
Elsa: Baron Elberfield. He's one of Georg's friends. I should like to meet him. I'd like to meet all your friends. Georg, why don't you give a dinner for me while I'm here? Nothing very much - just something lavish.

5) The children (female) - gossipy girls
Louisa: We have some things to tell you, too
Maria: You must have a great deal to tell me.
Brigitta: I guess the most important thing is that Father's going to be married.
Maria: Married?
Louisa: To Frau Schraeder.
Maria: Are you sure?
Brigitta: Oh yes - he just told us - he told us himself.

6) The children (males) fearful boys trying to be macho
Maria: You boys aren't frightened are you?
Kurt: Oh no we just wanted to make sure you weren't. (colluding with the audience)
Maria: Was this your idea Frederich?
Frederich: Oh no. It was Kurt's. (ironical)
Thunder and lightning (They run and hide under the bed clutching one another for support).
